Utilizing Strategies for Literacy
Each SEPUP module contains at least one strategy to support language
literacy. Shown below are the range of literacy strategies found
in the SEPUP modules.
These strategies support:
Reading Comprehension
Writing in Science
Critical Analysis of Media
Reading Comprehension
Reading Comprehension Prompts (pdf file) are a set of questions
that students can learn to use to monitor their understanding
of text while reading. SEPUP
recommends that teachers initially identify a subset of these questions
and model how they can be used to help decipher meaning from text.
Write As You Read Science (pdf file) offers suggestions for writing
activities that students perform as they read. For example,
students can circle text that
they don’t understand.
Graphic Organizers (pdf file) and Concept Maps are two ways to visually
represent the relationships among ideas presented in text. Developing
or displaying
such representations can aid students in extracting meaning from scientific
activities
and readings.
Writing in Science
Investigation Reports: A Guide for Students (pdf file) is a series
of prompts that can guide students in their description of the
purpose, procedure, results,
and conclusions of a scientific investigation.
Guidelines for Making Entries in Your
Science Notebook (pdf file)
lists the types of information that students can record about scientific
investigations.
Each
suggestion contains a prompt to help students get started.
Science Writing Checklist (pdf file): Students are guided through
all stages of the writing process—from first to final draft—with
specific tasks. The checklist can used to develop complete responses
to Analysis Questions or
other written assignments.
Critical Analysis of Media
Media Analysis Checklist (pdf file) is a set of questions to aid
students in evaluating media. These questions can help students
develop critical
thinking skills as they learn to identify the explicit and implicit
messages presented
in media.
