Parent cells that undergo mitosis produce two identical daughter cells. This occurs in humans and other multicellular organisms producing new cells. It is also how many single-celled organisms asexually reproduce.

In organisms that reproduce sexually, meiosis produces sex cells with half the number of chromosomes found in other cells. You will see animations of these processes, along with movies of actual cells undergoing mitosis and meiosis. In each phase for both processes, you will determine what happens to the genetic material of the cell.
As you watch the mitosis animation and then the film, record your observations as instructed on your student sheet. Use the large orange arrows to go forward or back in the animation and view particular phases.
STOP HERE! Once you have completed the Mitosis portion of this simulation, return to your student book to finish Activity 3, “Mitosis and Asexual Reproduction.”
Do not continue to the next portion of the simulation. You will complete the rest of the simulation when you are working on Activity 13, “Meiosis and Sexual Reproduction.”
As you watch the meiosis animation and then the film, record your observations as instructed on your student sheet.
